How Does a Bead Mill Grind Materials?

Bead mills, also known as sand mills, are mainly used in the wet grinding of chemical liquid products. They are the most adaptable, advanced, and efficient grinding equipment with the narrowest grinding chamber, the smallest lever gap, and the most intensive grinding energy. Continuous processing and continuous discharging of materials are reachable equipped with a high-performance cooling system and automatic control system, greatly improving production efficiency. The bead mill consists of a machine frame with a bottom valve and motor inside, a grinding chamber, an agitator shaft(rotor), and a feeding pump controlling the material input.

Compared with grinding equipment such as ball mills, roller mills, and colloid mills, bead mills are featured in production efficiency, strong continuity, low cost, and high product fineness. There are many types of bead mills, laboratory type, small type, medium type, large type, and ultra-large type according to the volume or chamber(from 0.5L, 1L, to 30L, etc.). According to the structural shape of the stirring shaft, it is divided into type disc, pin, and pin-disc, etc. Based on the layout of the grinding vessel, it is divided into vertical type and horizontal type.

 

Here is how it works. The premixed solid-liquid mixture gets pumped into the grinding chamber by the feeding pump and stirred with the grinding beads under the high-speed rotation from the rotor thereby providing stronger crushing, fricting, and shearing to the solid particles in the material, which accelerates the material grinding and Clusters dispersing. After grinding and dispersing, the mixture is separated from the grinding media through a separator(like screen separation or dynamic gap) to the discharge pipe.

The working parameters set in the bead mill such as the flow rate, greatly impact the desired fineness, throughput, and particle size distribution. The grinding efficiency, the final fineness, and the machine wearance are also related to the agitating speed. The grinding beads' specification(diameter, density, etc.) also affects the grinding efficiency and desired fineness. So does the filling rate of the grinding beads.
